Mateusz Dadej

I am Head of Economic Research for the Central and Eastern Europe (CEE) region at Coface, the French credit insurer, where I cover the economies of Central and Eastern Europe and Central Asia. I am also a member of the board at the Association of Polish Economists (Towarzystwo Ekonomistów Polskich).

My first name is pronounced Muh-TEH-woosh.

What I work on

My interest centres on the nexus of finance and macroeconomics, and on applied quantitative methods in economics.

In my day-to-day work I follow corporate insolvencies across Central and Eastern Europe — who is failing, in which sectors, and what that says about the wider economy — alongside growth and trade dynamics, the effects of geopolitics on the region, and country-specific developments from Poland and Czechia through to the Western Balkans and Central Asia. I comment on these topics regularly in the media, in both international and regional outlets.

My academic work is on systemic risk, financial contagion and business cycle transmission. You can find my papers here, the talks I have given at Oxford, Warsaw, Marseille and elsewhere, and a CV with the longer version.

Background

I completed my PhD at the University of Brescia, with research focused on quantitative methods for macro-financial stability. During my doctoral studies I was a visiting researcher at the University of Mannheim. I obtained my Master’s degree in Economics at the University of Gdańsk, including an academic exchange at the University of Pisa.

Before starting the PhD I was a quantitative analyst at an investment bank, developing stress testing models. I have authored papers in computational economics and empirical finance, and I write open-source software — including MarSwitching.jl, a Julia package for Markov switching models.
